A Nottingham native himself, Sillitoe drew directly on his own experiences growing up in the city - his father worked at the Raleigh factory that forms the backdrop to the story.  Quintessentially Nottingham, it captures the city in a very different era - yet one that remains unmistakably familiar at its core.
